Start with one walkable lane and four decisions: keep, move elsewhere, remove, and decide later. Limit the last group so it does not become a second garage.

Open a path before opening boxes

Choose a route from the garage door to the back wall. Move only enough material to make that lane safe. A clear path prevents sorted piles from being stepped over or mixed together.

Use decisions that match the next action

Keep hereUsed in the garage and given a specific shelf or wall location.
Move elsewhereBelongs in the house, yard or another storage area.
RemoveUnwanted, broken or no longer useful.
Decide laterOne small, dated group for items that need another person's answer.

Protect what stays

Keep tools, keepsakes and documents away from the removal pile. Close containers and mark anything that should not be touched. Photograph shelves or boxes if several people share the garage.

Flag restricted material

Paint, fuel, batteries, pesticides and similar household hazardous waste need a separate disposal route. The City of Redlands operates a household hazardous and electronic waste program; check its current rules before transporting material.

Prepare for the estimate

Count bulky pieces, estimate how much floor area the loose material covers and note stairs, gates or a long carry. A few wide photos can explain the volume and the access path better than a long item list.

Cleanout-day checklist

  • One clear lane from the garage to the loading area
  • Items staying in a marked zone
  • Hazardous or unknown material separated
  • Vehicle and gate access confirmed
  • One decision-maker available by phone

Source notes

Material restrictions and municipal options should be checked against the current City of Redlands solid-waste and household hazardous-waste guidance. Service scope is confirmed during the estimate call.
